As the project is approaching completion we are glad to announce that we are organizing an International Symposium to take place at ULB on 15-16 April 2021 with the following title:
Forging Values: Metals Technologies and Social Interactions in Greece and the Mediterranean from the 4th to the 1st millennium BC
Starting from the North Aegean and examining its connections with neighbouring or more distant lands it is important to put metals production, exchange and connectivity in a broader perspective. Therefore, the topic of the symposium concerns mining, metallurgy and trade in metals from the Late Neolithic to the Hellenistic period in Greece and surrounding regions aiming to attempt a current synthesis of ongoing research. Issues such as the production and trade of copper in the Bronze Age, the emergence and adoption of iron technology, hacksilber used as a pre-monetary medium of exchange and the large scale extraction and purification of precious metals used for coinage are among the major themes of the symposium.
